Body images, modifications, enhancements and self-portraits have always been a feature of the arts since their inception, and new technologies have always been integrated and repurposed to create alternative identity models to the mainstream. For example, French artist ORLAN has been questioning current biological, medical and information technologies, including robotics and artificial intelligence (AI), for five decades. In the symposium Augmented by the Other, protagonists from the fields of philosophy, art theory and sociology of technology discuss these artificial and artistic visons of society.
