“The most exalted show of the opening days eliciting a massive ovation” - The Guardian
"The instant standing ovation in Avignon wasn’t merely a way to reward the performers for their efforts: “One Song” lingered in the mind as a wild, exhilarating studyin absurdity." - The New York Times
“A rocking primal scream bursting with zest for life, energy and humour.” - De Standaard
What is the history of theatre makers?
At the invitation of NTGent, Miet Warlop is the fourth artist to develop a work for “Histoire(s) du Théâtre” – following Milo Rau, Faustin Linyekula and Angélica Liddell.
Miet Warlop formulates an answer in a way that only she can. ‘ONE SONG – Histoire(s) du Théâtre IV’ takes place in Warlop's unique universe. A group of performers enters the arena for a fascinating ritual about farewell, life and death, hope and resurrection. Together they experience extremes: through songs, images and objects, oxygen and sweat, they evoke our ‘condition humaine’, our human condition. Again and again, someone stands up to transcend their limits. They defy time and express a deep human need: the moment when we can transcend our thinking bodies. Through the metaphor of a live competition/concert, Miet Warlop invites us in ONE SONG to form a community and inspire each other as if at a celebration. The temporary thus becomes universal, and the personal becomes collective. This is the subtext of ONE SONG: how a single song can give meaning to an entire society. Unity in diversity.
