Artistic Intelligences
In the multimedia art of French pioneer ORLAN, ‚intelligence’ always arises through dialogue with ‘the other’ – other people, cultures, technologies. In her politically engaged practice since the 1960s, she uses hybrid self-portraits to reveal a wide variety of nomadic, mutant, and shifting identities in which body image and image body merge. ORLAN’s show at Muffatwerk presents new works involving robotics, such as her ORLANOÏDE as the centrepiece – a moving sculpture in her image that speaks with her voice and answers, multi-lingually, the audience’s questions. Other works include artificial intelligence and augmented reality, critical examinations of plastic surgery and biotechnology, as well as a cross-section of her oeuvre with performances, photography, video, 3D animation, collages and musical compositions that encourage us to engage in more physical contact and restart slow dancing after the Covid pandemic.
